    Monte Carlo calculations for the ATLAS cavern background

    A new application for simulating the ATLAS cavern background was developed. This was done using FLUGG, software that allows Geant4 geometry to be used within the FLUKA simulation framework. A Geant4 description of the ATLAS detector including its cavern was built from scratch for this application. In order to gain computing performance, our geometry is less detailed than that of GeoModel which is used in the full detector simulation, but good enough for the investigation of cavern background. Our geometry can also be used in a standalone Geant4 simulation. Thus it is possible to perform unbiased comparisons between Geant4 and FLUKA using the same complex geometry. We compared neutron and photon fluxes using the FLUKA-FLUGG application with the result of Geant4 simulations based on the QGSP_BERT and QGSP_BERT_HP physics lists. In all cases the same set of initial collision 4-vectors produced by the PHOJET event generator was used. The result from the QGSP_BERT_HP physics list, which uses the High Precision (HP) neutron model, is similar to the result of FLUKA-FLUGG and the differences in the fluxes between them are within 40% in most regions of the ATLAS cavern. The result from the QGSP_BERT physics list, which does not include the HP model, does not agree with either of the previous two results

    Tandem plasmaferesi-emodialisi in bambini e giovani adulti

    In pazienti che necessitino sia di plasmaferesi (PLF) che di emodialisi (ED), l'applicazione simultanea delle due metodiche, nota come tandem PLF-ED (TPE) può costituire una soluzione vantaggiosa. Tuttavia esiste scarsa esperienza circa il suo utilizzo, in particolare in età pediatrica. Abbiamo esaminato in modo retrospettivo le sedute di TPE eseguite negli ultimi 5 anni nel nostro Centro. I trattamenti di TPE sono stati 67 in 7 pazienti, di età mediana 16.2 anni (5–34) e peso mediano di 37 kg (17.0– 59.0). Le indicazioni per TPH erano: sindrome emolitica uremica atipica da deficit di fattore H, fattore I o da mutazioni non definite, nella maggior parte delle sedute (64/67 sedute), vasculite, glomerulosclerosi focale (prima del trapianto) e iperimmunizzazione in pazienti in lista per trapianto di rene. In 66/67 trattamenti la procedura è stata completata con successo, raggiungendo i volumi di sostituzione e ultrafiltrazione desiderati. La durata della PLF è stata inferiore a quella di ED, e non ha quindi comportato un prolungamento della seduta dialitica. Un unico trattamento è stato interrotto a causa di un episodio ipotensivo, in una paziente nota per ipotensioni ricorrenti. In conclusione la TPE è una procedura sicura e ben tollerata, anche in bambini e adolescenti stabili dal punto di vista emodinamico

    Use of Machine-Learning Algorithms in Intensified Preoperative Therapy of Pancreatic Cancer to Predict Individual Risk of Relapse

    Background: Although surgical resection is the only potentially curative treatment for pancreatic cancer (PC), long-term outcomes of this treatment remain poor. The aim of this study is to describe the feasibility of a neoadjuvant treatment with induction polychemotherapy (IPCT) followed by chemoradiation (CRT) in resectable PC, and to develop a machine-learning algorithm to predict risk of relapse. Methods: Forty patients with resectable PC treated in our institution with IPCT (based on mFOLFOXIRI, GEMOX or GEMOXEL) followed by CRT (50 Gy and concurrent Capecitabine) were retrospectively analyzed. Additionally, clinical, pathological and analytical data were collected in order to perform a 2-year relapse-risk predictive population model using machine-learning techniques. Results: A R0 resection was achieved in 90% of the patients. After a median follow-up of 33.5 months, median progression-free survival (PFS) was 18 months and median overall survival (OS) was 39 months. The 3 and 5-year actuarial PFS were 43.8% and 32.3%, respectively. The 3 and 5-year actuarial OS were 51.5% and 34.8%, respectively. Forty-percent of grade 3-4 IPCT toxicity, and 29.7% of grade 3 CRT toxicity were reported. Considering the use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors, the number of resected lymph nodes, the presence of perineural invasion and the surgical margin status, a logistic regression algorithm predicted the individual 2-year relapse-risk with an accuracy of 0.71 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.56-0.84, p = 0.005). The model-predicted outcome matched 64% of the observed outcomes in an external dataset. Conclusion: An intensified multimodal neoadjuvant approach (IPCT + CRT) in resectable PC is feasible, with an encouraging long-term outcome. Machine-learning algorithms might be a useful tool to predict individual risk of relapse. A small sample size and therapy heterogeneity remain as potential limitations

    Standalone vertex finding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Measurements of Higgs boson production and couplings in diboson final states with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements are presented of production properties and couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson using the decays into boson pairs, H →γ γ, H → Z Z∗ →4l and H →W W∗ →lνlν. The results are based on the complete pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 25 fb−1. Evidence for Higgs boson production through vector-boson fusion is reported. Results of combined fits probing Higgs boson couplings to fermions and bosons, as well as anomalous contributions to loop-induced production and decay modes, are presented. All measurements are consistent with expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson

    Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying τ lepton

    A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb -1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction

    Hunt for new phenomena using large jet multiplicities and missing transverse momentum with ATLAS in 4.7 fb−1 of √s=7 TeV proton-proton collisions

    Results are presented of a search for new particles decaying to large numbers of jets in association with missing transverse momentum, using 4.7 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√=7TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. The event selection requires missing transverse momentum, no isolated electrons or muons, and from ≥6 to ≥9 jets. No evidence is found for physics beyond the Standard Model. The results are interpreted in the context of a MSUGRA/CMSSM supersymmetric model, where, for large universal scalar mass m 0, gluino masses smaller than 840 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level, extending previously published limits. Within a simplified model containing only a gluino octet and a neutralino, gluino masses smaller than 870 GeV are similarly excluded for neutralino masses below 100 GeV

    Mapping Cumulative Environmental Risks: Examples from The EU NoMiracle Project

    We present examples of cumulative chemical risk mapping methods developed within the NoMiracle project. The different examples illustrate the application of the concentration addition (CA) approach to pesticides at different scale, the integration in space of cumulative risks to individual organisms under the CA assumption, and two techniques to (1) integrate risks using data-driven, parametric statistical methods, and (2) cluster together areas with similar occurrence of different risk factors, respectively. The examples are used to discuss some general issues, particularly on the conventional nature of cumulative risk maps, and may provide some suggestions for the practice of cumulative risk mapping
